Types of Indian Music
Classical Indian music can be identified as being either Hidustani or Carnatic music. Both genres use raga , a melodic structure, and tala , a rhythmic pattern of notes. Each raga creates a certain mood and has a specific time in which it is meant to be performed. There are three main parts to a Hindustani and Carnatic performance. In the beginning, alaap must be present. It is relatively slow and introduces the notes of the specific raga used while creating the mood of the piece. The next component present in jor. It acquaints the audience with the rhythm and melody of the piece. And finally, to be a true classical Indian piece, jhala is used to conclude the performance by increasing the tempo.
Carnatic and Hindustani music share these things in common, however, they are different genres that came to be under much historical and cultural happenings. Through various events over India's history evolved two different styles of Indian music. The Hindustani genre came to be after the Muslim and Persian invasions establishing the Mughal Empire in the 16th century. Traditional Indian music combined with Islamic influences and Hindustani music was formed. However, this invasion was mainly in the northern part of India. The Carnatic music of the south was not affected by foreign influence and remained, and to this day remains, untouched.
