2. Golden Period of India – 500BCE- 800 CE

3. Muslim Influence in India – 1000 CE – 1700 CE
- 1st attack from the Muslims was in 17 CE
- They wanted to take over India to spread the belief of Islam
- They liked that India was a wealthy country
- They systemically replaced the Hindu society with their own
- They were never able to rule it entirely

- After 700 years of Muslim occupation, India was recaptured by the Marathas
- 1630-1849 CE Marathas and Sikhs ruled India
- 1846 CE was the Anglo-Sikh war and the British power became dominant

4. British Period in India – 1700 CE- 1947CE
1498 CE Arrival of European trade
- 1601 CE East India Company was formed
- Gained control of all European trade in India by 1769
- Dutch, Portuguese, and French traders were very disappointed

- 1853 CE first railway from Bombay to Thane and the first telegraph line from Calcutta to Agra.
- Initial purpose was to provide communication and transportation for the British Empire but later used for the common people
5. Modern India- 1947 CE- to present
- 1947 India gained independence from British rule by leadership of Gandhi
- Division in India into two countries: Sovereign Democratic Republic of India and Islamic Republic of Pakistan
- There has been deep rooted fighting between Hindu and Muslim religions
- Discrimination and differences that can not be resolved which results in repeated wars against eachother
