Veena
The veena is one of the most ancient string instruments of India. It is 1.5 m long and is made from jackwood. The end of the neck is carved into the head of a dragon. The veena consists of 24 metal frets and 4 metal strings which run over the neck. Three other strings run alongside the neck of the instrument and are used for keeping time and playing drone. The veena is a complete instrument and provides the basic components: sruti, laya, and sahitya. Its main attraction is the mellow tonal quality which is capable of evoking a meditative atmosphere.
