Harmonium
The harmonium is a reed organ with hand pumped bellows. It is also known as peti or baja, and it is not a native Indian instrument. It was imported from Europe in the 19th century. Although the Europeen model came in both hand pumped and foot pumped models, the foot pumped models disappeared many years ago in India. This is because the foot pedal requires one to sit in a chair, something which is unusual for most Indian musicians. The only advantage of the foot model was that is freed both hands so that both melody and chords could be played. However, there are no chords in Indian music, so this made no difference. Also, the hand pumped model was more portable and comfortable when played while sitting on the floor.
