Indian Classical Music
To most Western audiences, music from India sounds quite exoctic. The differences between the traditions in tuning and scales is what makes the music of India so unique. There is a wide span of Indian music tradtions, including folk songs, tribal music, classical and semi-classical tradtions, and popular music. Across the counrty, the music styles may change from region to region.
There are two recognised styles of Indian classical music that are very distinct but related traditions. The Northern Indian tradition, which is the more familar style to the rest of the world, is known as the Hindustani tradition. The Southern Indian tradition is called Carnatic (also spelt Karnatak or Karnatik).
